I had been stuck in a loop using a scale that has two steps followed by two gaps, so E, G, G#, B, C, D#. I recorded one thing I really liked, Composition #5, and nothing else worked. I picked up the Danelectro tuned in open G#, and after a few minutes the opening riff emerged and I recorded it immediately. The rest followed quickly, except for the drums, which required a lot of finagling. This is the most "prog rock" thing I've recorded in a long time, I think.
